Pakistan: Six mourners killed, at least 40 injured in Rohri historical Muharram procession


At least six Azad's were killed and nearly 40 injured in a sweltering summer in the ancient city of Rohri in northern Sindh, Pakistan, in a stampede and stampede. According to the police, the incident took place when a large number of pilgrims tried to kiss the shrine and a stampede led to a stampede.

The local police and Edhi volunteers have so far confirmed the blasts, while according to the Ulema Council, three of the mourners belong to Ghotki, two belong to Nowshehru Feroze and the mourners belong to Sukkur.

Rohri is located on the Indus river and Sukkur railway station is also located in the famous city of same city. Shama Gul is mourned here on the eighth of Muharram.

According to the Rohri police, during the scene of the shrine, many mourners fainted from the members, and all the victims were taken to the hospitals of Rohri and Sukkur.

A mourning procession bigger than Rohri takes place on the 8th of Muharram from Imambargah Karbala Maali and on the Ashura night of Karbala, just as Imam Hussain lit a candle, mourning is done by lighting a candle and this process has been going on for about 345 years.

Rohri city is built on a hill so its streets are small and narrow. There were reports of some pilgrims fainting since the 8th of Muharram due to extreme heat and hypothermia, but on the 9th of Muharram, due to the increase in the number of pilgrims, it intensified.

As people fainted in large numbers in the darkness and confusion, an atmosphere of panic prevailed, which led to a brief stampede in the procession but was soon brought under control by the administration. Due to the presence of a large number of mourners in the procession, it was also difficult to reach the ambulance.

It should be remembered that the largest mourning gathering in North Sindh takes place in Rohri, in which people not only from Sindh but also from Punjab participate. People also arrive on the roofs of trains to participate in this procession.


The local administration says that the situation is currently under control.
